Natural Resource Development examines the linkages between development and Natural Resources, Principles of Managing Natural Resources, and the sustainable conservation of these resources. The Programme depicts on case studies from a wide range of the current natural resource across the globe, the course considers how different social, political, economic and cultural and gender aspects compete for and sustain the natural resources.
The course also uses a gender perspective to examine the interventions by environmental activists in conserving natural resources in the face of climate change. The course will consider both local and international best practices in sustainable management of natural resources. The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills to become competent professionals who can plan for sustainable use of natural resources globally.

Course objectives
• To introduce the learners to the key concepts of natural resources and development.
• To equip learners with skills in preserving, conserving and sustainable use of natural resources in the face of climate change.
• To equip learners with the knowledge on how to critique international responses on the use of natural resources.
• To explore cross cultural communication and collaborations
Learning outcomes
At the end of a course, a student should be able to:
• Utilize the key concepts of natural resources and development.
• Apply the skills in preserving, conserving and sustainable use of natural resources in the face of climate change.
• Demonstrate the knowledge on how to critique international responses on the use of natural resources.
• Determine the cross cultural conservation practices across different regions
Contact hours:
The course will be delivered from Monday—Thursday for a period of Two (2) weeks on a Face to Face basis.
On Fridays, all students shall be taken to different Historical, cultural and geographical sites in and around Kampala. These field visits will be composed of a range of ‘activities’ relating to their academic content (e.g. museum visit, visiting the source of River Nile, women conservation projects, Uganda Wildlife Authority, National Environment Authority, Uganda Tourism Board).
In the 3 weeks, students will go to the field to put theory into practice. Kidepo Valley National Park and Karamoja region, North Eastern Uganda will be the field site for 2022 Uganda summer intake. Students will interact with communities surrounding the park and their co-existence with wildlife. Wrap up and evaluations will be in the 4th week.

Week 1: Understanding development and Natural resources

- Oil and Gas
Week 2: Functions and interventions
- Environmental activism
- Parks and Wildlife
- Integrated water resources management.
Week 3: Community Outreach/practice- Kidepo Valley National Park & Karamoja Region
- Nature Walk in the national Park
- Cultural encounters in kidepo valley- Lorokul and the pastoral karamajong cultures
- Bird viewing, game viewing, camping and sight seeing
- Understanding how communities adjacent to Kidepo Valley National Park co-exist with Wild animals
Week 4: Horizons for Natural resources and development
- Climate change and natural resources effects
- Gender and natural resource management
- Evaluations
Each course unit takes 2.0 Credit Units (CU) and the total Credit Units shall be 18 CU.
