PSYCHOLOGY AND AFRICAN CULTURE SUMMER SCHOOL THIS 2019

ABOUT THE PSYCHOLOGY AND AFRICAN CULTURE SUMMER SCHOOL

WELCOME TO THE PEARL OF AFRICA

Our summer school courses focus mostly on African issues – Psychology, language, culture, history, and contemporary society. I hope you will learn a lot about Uganda, but also a lot about your own society. One of the great benefits of studying abroad is the opportunity it offers for reflecting upon what you are already familiar with. Being introduced to different cultures should lead to a fruitful consideration of what you so easily take for granted in your own culture and background. “Come to Uganda – Meet the World” is one of the slogans of the Kyambogo University Summer Schools.

Assessment:

  • Is optional and will be in the form of a 2000-2500 word essay to be handed online, within 2 weeks after the end of the course.
  • Certificates after the training will be issued.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Lying at the intersection of many other disciplines, from linguistics to philosophy, studying psychology allows students to develop many different skills and modes of thought. Frequently studied psychological questions include ‘How do we perceive the world around us?’, ‘Is there a link between genius and madness?’, ‘Why do we conform to societies norms?’, ‘What is emotion?’

Psychology is the scientific study of mental life.

The human brain is the most complex object on earth containing over 100 billion nerve cells, and 100 trillion connections among them. It is the source of all thought and behaviour.

Focusing on the relationship between brain, mind and behaviour, the study of psychology provides students with the opportunity to be on the frontier of scientific research, involved in a fast-moving and rapidly changing subject.

At Kyambogo University the emphasis is on scientific rigor, and evidence based discussion, teaching students to think critically and analytically, and question the information presented to them.

Psychology is the subject for students with natural curiosity, who question the world around them and are interested in covering a diverse range of disciplines, while upholding the principles of scientific analysis.

Welcome remarks from the coordinator

KAKINDA ADRIAN IVAN

CORDINATOR Psychology and African culture summer school

One of the most important missions of our university is to educate students that contribute to, as well as benefit from, a pluralistic society. We want to educate global citizens that can enter a global labour market and that can act on a deep-felt and informed responsibility for the global community.  This mission of ours is highlighted in this very year which has internationalization and collaboration as the prime focus area.

One thing is obvious. We must build a safety net of knowledge and trust that spans cultural divides. The antidote lies in a tightly knit fabric of international community.  I am certain that you – as future leaders – will help weave this fabric and help instill respect for the “oneness of humanity”.

I trust that your stay will make you open to the possibility of returning to Kyambogo University to pursue a degree, to do research, or to work here. You should know one thing for sure: you are welcome today, and you are welcome back!
